Slating

pitched01

Since our company was formed back in 1984 traditional slating and tiling has been the backbone of our business. Although methods and materials have changed over the years we have been able to invest time and training so that all our tradesman remain fully qualified to work with a wide range of both traditional and modern roofing materials.

We currently employ over 40 tradesmen all of whom are fully trained in slating and tiling and regularly carry out re-roofing work using natural slate materials from all over the world. Natural Welsh slate has always been a firm favourite, but recent changes in the way that quarries and mines are worked has led to a influx of companies importing slates from countries such as Canada, Spain, the USA and even China.

As well as natural sized slates, ie slates that are of a uniform width and length, our tradesman often work with random natural slate materials such as Westmoreland, Burlington, Delabole and Yorkshire or Derbyshire stone. Due to their random length and width these materials require advanced skills in order to be laid correctly. We are an approved contractor for the National Trust working on many historical buildings across the country; many of these contracts have involved the use of natural stone slate, either new or reclaimed.

Because of the rising costs of producing natural slate the use of manmade slate such as cement fibre or reconstituted slate has become more common. Although these types of slates appear to be a cost effective alternative to their natural counterparts, careful consideration should be made as to their suitability for the

property, We install many thousands of cement fibre slates every year for both private and commercial customers on new build and refurbishment projects

Tiling

More and more people are turning to tiling as a cost effective alternative for both new build and refurbishment projects. Our tradesmen use many different types of tiles, both concrete and clay, on a regular basis. Some of our tradesman are tiling specialists, having trained predominantly in the installation of concrete and clay tiles.

When installed correctly Natural Clay tiles are a beautiful addition to almost any roof. Clay has proven itself to

be one of earths' most versatile materials. It's natural durability means that natural clay tiles often outlast their concrete counterparts time and time again. A great deal of our clay tile work involves the use of reclaimed tiles, which have been removed from an existing roof and are suitable to be re-installed onto a new roof. This technique of reclaiming clay tiles is particularly useful when trying to match a new roof with an existing one. People often comment and how seamlessly they integrate with the existing tiles.

Concrete tiles are a cost effective alternative to clay and are available in many different sizes, profiles and colours. Because of their relative low cost, concrete tiles are becoming very popular with house builders and developers. They are particularly useful on large residential or office developments because of their size, relative ease of use and low cost compared with natural materials.
