Boots The Chemist, West Street
RESTORING AN INNER CITY GEM
Despite Sheffield’s well-documented destruction during World War II, some architectural gems remain, although they are not always apparent from ground level.
National health and beauty chain, Boots, is privileged enough to occupy one of the most highly decorated buildings in the city centre, sporting a host of intricate stone work and an impressive lead covered dome.
Martin-Brooks’ skilled heritage craftsmen were called upon to refurbish the roof and domed area on the client’s West Street premises in what can only be described as a ‘slater’s paradise,’ thanks to the amount of cutting work involved.
Close proximity to the city’s Supertram network meant special arrangements had to be made to erect the access scaffolding safely. We liaised with tram operators, Stagecoach, to request that the overhead electric cables be shut down after its service had finished, which unfortunately meant a late night for the scaffolders!
CUPA Iberian natural roofing slates were used to refurbish the main pitched roof, fitted onto a Tyvek HD Plus Breather membrane. An area of flat roof also needed replacing and here, we installed Casali’s high performance system on top of Roofco Retrotek insulation recovery boards. Surrounding stonework was cleaned and re-pointed during the refurbishment and our lead experts repaired the flashings, soakers and gutters.
