Woodview Cottage, Cawthorne
THE FINEST NATURAL FINISH
Cawthorne is nestled on the edge of the Peak District, near Barnsley and is one of the area’s most desirable residential locations.
Any new home erected in such a picturesque village will inevitably attract much public scrutiny, making it essential that only the highest quality materials and craftsmanship are employed in its construction.
Local developer, Dodson Building Services, asked Martin-Brooks to suggest a suitable roof covering for a new build residential project on which it was working. The firm was keen to ensure the property complemented its neighbours, yet stood out as an example of architectural excellence.
The surrounding houses were built with natural stone roofs, so we sourced samples of reclaimed York stone, Hardrow concrete slates and new stone slates from the Ladycross quarry in Northumberland for the clients to view. After visiting a project we had completed in new stone, they decided this was the finish they preferred.
Various mitred hips, valley gutters and dormer windows made this a fairly complex pitched roof and meant the slate courses had to be planned meticulously in advance to ensure the diminishing effect was the same across the entire property.
The Ladycross stone was supplied in lengths ranging from 300-600mm, in an assortment of widths. To ensure we achieved a consistent finish, the slates had to be sorted on site to match the dimensions of the roof area, a job made more difficult by ongoing construction, which dictated that some slates needed to be set aside for areas of the roof that were to be completed at a later date.
We fitted the Ladycross stone onto a Tyvek Supro underlay and topped the roof off with a line of Hardrow ridge stones along the apex, bedded into lime mortar. Our team also carried out lead work to the valley gutters, flashings and cladding to the dormer window structures.
The final finish was so superb that Wood View Cottage secured Martin-Brooks a nomination for the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) Quality in Roofing Award.
